One of the big trends I see happening in the Health IT world is that every company wants to be a thought leader in the industry. It’s a powerful thing to provide thought leadership to your potential customers. It can also be an extremely challenging thing for an organization to sell that type of investment to their executive leadership team.

With that in mind, we’ve been working on some really compelling thought leadership marketing packages for health IT companies. It’s literally a fully integrated marketing package which integrates with our existing readership, email marketing, social media mentions (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Google Plus, etc), and ongoing traffic from search engines and related posts. Plus, you can use that thought leadership content in your own marketing efforts.

gMed (Advertiser since 8/2013) – I had a really great chance this summer to get to know gMed on a much deeper level when they invited me to give the Keynote on the future of EHR at their EHR user conference. They certainly do make a compelling case for their Gastro specific EHR software. There are things they do because they’re specialty specific that you’ll really never see from a general EHR vendor.

Modernizing Medicine (Advertiser since 1/2014) – This is another specialty specific EHR vendor that takes a really unique approach to how you document a visit. If they are in your specialty (Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Plastic Surgery, Otolaryngology, Gastroenterology, Urology, Rheumatology, Cosmetics), be sure to get a demo and see what makes them unique. The Changing EHR and Health IT Landscape

We’re entering a really interesting period for healthcare IT. I’d say this is the start of a really big transition period for the EHR market. The government induced demand for EHR will end soon and we’ll see very different dynamics going forward. With that said, I think we’re about to enter one of the most exciting periods of healthcare IT ever. The wheat is going to be sifted from the chaff and the cream will rise to the top. We’re about to enter a phase where people are more worried about how to get the most out of their EHR versus getting an EHR.

This is what makes us most excited at EMR and EHR. We’re entering a really exciting time where I believe we’re going to see some amazing new EHR uses. We’ll do our best to continue keeping you up to date on the latest happenings in the EMR, EHR, and health IT worlds.

I’m excited to say that we just passed our 1200th blog post on EMRandEHR.com. What an amazing body of work that we’ve created on this site. We couldn’t have done it without the support of our readers and advertisers. I deeply appreciate both groups more than I can express in a blog post.

They provide a managed services environment that many health IT companies will find interesting. I can see a lot of health IT startup companies that could benefit from the 30 day free trial, but a 30 day free trial is great for anyone who wants to get a feel for how well their hosting works.

Almost 3 Million EMR and EHR Pageviews

I just checked the stats for EMR and EHR and realized that we’re about to top 3 million pageviews since we first started the blog back in April 2009. That’s pretty exciting since the first year of the blog I really didn’t do much with it. Over the life of EMR and EHR we’ve posted 1057 posts and had 2927 comments (not counting the 95,665 spam comments we’ve filtered).

A big thanks to Anne Zieger (244 posts) and Jennifer Dennard (114 posts) for all their contributions over the years as well. They’ve both made amazing contributions to the site and likely don’t get the credit they deserve. I’m lucky because not only are they great writers who know the industry well, but they’re wonderful people. I’m proud to associate with them.

Clinithink – I’ve often heard doctors proclaim NLP as the perfect balance between clinical narrative and structured data. Clinithink is focused squarely on this challenge. gMed – A specialty specific EHR focused on Gastroenterologists. I was excited to work with gMed on a mix of advertising across the Healthcare Scene blog network together with some whitepaper distribution that should work well for their specialty specific EHR. Any gastro doctor should consider gMed and compare it with the non-specialty specific EHR out there. There’s usually a vast difference in focus.

The Breakaway Group – A Xerox company, The Breakaway Group is doing some really interesting things in the area of EHR training. I worked together with them to provide some coverage of their Healthcare Forum event. Plus, I’m excited that we just closed a deal for them to create a series of blog posts on the Healthcare Scene network.

It’s time to recognize all the great companies that have been supporting the work we do here at EMR and EHR. We have a really amazing list of advertisers that support the writing we do here on EMR and EHR. As you’ll see from the list below, many of them have been advertising with us for many years. New EMR and EHR Advertisers
Xerox Healthcare – Over the past month I’ve started to work with Xerox on a number of fronts. Many of you will likely remember my blog post about TEDMED. My trip to TEDMED was made possible thanks to Xerox. Plus, Xerox has been advertising on my site as well. It’s impressive how Xerox has shifted from being a copier company to a major player in healthcare. I should also mention, I’m doing a Google Plus Hangout with Xerox to wrap up the TEDMED experience. Come join in live.

simplifyMD – Besides doing some cool EHR cartoons, they also offer a different approach to EHR than many EHR vendors out there. They have a clear focus on the productivity of the physician. They have a solid team behind the product and we’re glad to have their support.

Canon – I imagine many people’s first thought with Canon is their excellent line of cameras. However, Canon also has an excellent line of scanners as well. For example, I previously reviewed the Canon imageFORMULA DR-C125. It’s an excellent scanner that can handle the heavy scanning workload of healthcare.

Forerunsystems – One of the specialty specific areas of EHR has always been the ED. Forerun’s FlexChart specializes in clinical documentation solutions for the ED. FlexChart provides quality care enhancements that are usable, flexible, and work with any style of documentation and workflow, as well as supporting safe hand-offs with enhanced provider communication. FlexChart is designed to work with and enhance any existing hospital-wide system, while enabling ED physicians with the tools they need that are unique to emergency medicine.

Chetu – The best introduction I can make to Chetu is this interview with Craig Schmidt, Director of Global Sales for Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals at Chetu. As that interview illustrates, Chetu has developing software for the healthcare industry for a very long time. It’s really amazing to see the depth of healthcare expertise combined with broad tech knowledge.

ZH Healthcare – For those who wonder how mature open source is in the EMR world, all you have to do is take a look at ZH Healthcare. They offer an EHR product based on the community version of OpenEMR along with ZH Healthcare’s proprietary enhancements and support services. I’m a huge proponent of open source software in general and so I’m really happy that a company built on the back of OpenEMR’s open source software is supporting us. If you like open source, then take a look and see what ZH Healthcare is doing with OpenEMR.

It’s that time of the year when we recognize all the great companies that have been supporting the work we do here at EMR and EHR. We have a really amazing list of advertisers that make the writing we do here on EMR and EHR possible. As you’ll see from the list below, many of them have been advertising with us for many years. ABBY USA – ABBY is a fascinating company that provides some really interesting business process and data capture solutions. I first came across ABBY when I was in college working at a document management company, so they’ve been doing this stuff for a long time. While most of us would love to think that in the EHR world we would be able to get rid of paper, that’s just not the reality of EHR. If you want to be a truly paperless office, then you need to get a great document data capture process in place. If you have this problem, check out what ABBY FlexiCapture has to offer.

Quest Quality Solutions – I was first introduced to Quest’s Health IT Quality Solutions program at HIMSS this year. While most of you know, that I’m generally anti-certifications, I’m not against highly focused certifications like this one that have very specific goals and benefits. The idea that Quest would work with EHR vendors to ensure the quality of the lab data they receive and send is a good thing. As we’ve seen, not all EHR software are equal, but if they’re getting their lab data processed incorrectly that’s a big problem. If we don’t solve the health data quality issues now, then EHR will continue to perpetuate the bad data through the system. So, I hope that Quest Quality Solutions will help to improve the quality o the EHR lab data.

It’s getting close to a year since I last wrote a post about the companies who support the work we do here at EMR and EHR. Since it has been so long, I thought I’d just list all of the companies that have ads on EMR and EHR and say a few thoughts about each company. I also dug back into my archives and figured out how long they’ve been advertising with me. It’s amazing to see some advertisers going all the way back to 2009.

Practice Fusion – Advertiser since 4/2010 – I had to really dig into my email to see when Practice Fusion first started advertising on EMR and EHR. A name change made it even harder, but I found the original email when Kellie first emailed about Practice Fusion advertising. I imagine most people know about Practice Fusion’s Free EHR. I should ask them how many people have signed up for their EHR from ads on my sites. Considering it’s free, I bet it’s a large number of sign ups. It’s really quite amazing how far Practice Fusion has come in the past few years and I think they’re really just getting started. I love having front row seats to the Free EHR model at work.

Ambir – Advertiser since 1/2010 – I’ve been a fan of Ambir ever since I my clinic had to drop a few thousand dollars on non-Ambir scanners for their office. Sure, for a few thousand dollars the clinic got some great scanners that worked well, but if I’d known about Ambir at the time we could have saved a lot of money. I’m planning to do a full write up of their Ambir ADF scanner. It’s a really sweet product at a much better price point than the other industrial strength scanners out there.

SOAPWare – Advertiser since 7/2010 – Not only has SOAPWare been a long time supporter of EMR and EHR, but they’re also regular readers of my sites and some of the nicest people you’ll meet in this world. I think it’s the southern roots of the company along with their founder, Randall Oates, MD, that guides who they are as a company. If you ever get the chance to sit down and talk with Randall Oates, I can assure you that you won’t be disappointed. He’s been doing EHR software since before it was called EHR software. I think that’s reflected in SOAPWare’s approach to EHR development.

Mitochon – Advertiser since 12/2010 – Founded by Dr. Andre Vovan, Mitochon has a vision around connecting doctors through a Free EHR, Free PM, and Free HIE. In many ways, when I first met Andre Vovan and Mitochon back in 2010 he was already talking about what we now call ACOs. Offering the whole suite of health IT services (EHR, PM, and HIE) for Free is a really interesting way to be able to achieve an ACO and for that matter connected healthcare.

Amazing Charts – Advertiser since 5/2011 – One thing that sets Amazing Charts apart from other EHR software is that it was founded and first created by a physician, Dr. Jonathan Bertman. At HIMSS I had a meeting with Dr. Bertman and at one point he described how Amazing Charts didn’t mind leaving money on the table. I found it a really interesting way to describe their corporate approach to not try and nickel and dime the doctor at every corner. I think this approach is something that doctors really appreciate when their selecting and purchasing an EHR.

Elsevier – Advertiser since 9/2011 – I’m sure many of you have seen the name Elsevier all over healthcare. They are a company with a large footprint in healthcare across a variety of parts. In the case of EMR and EHR, Elsevier is advertising their Gold Standard Drug Database. For those who don’t realize it, EHR vendors don’t create their own drug database (with very few exceptions). Instead, EHR vendors rely on databases like Elsevier’s Gold Standard Drug Database. Turns out this is a much better model. Most EHR vendors would do a terrible job trying to create a drug database themselves.

Medical Mastermind – Advertiser since 1/2012 – Originally started as a practice management system, Medical Mastermind has been working in healthcare since 1984. They take a very hands on approach to supporting their customers and while they’re known for their practice management software, they’ve also added EMR and ePrescribing as well.

Cerner – Advertiser since 9/2011 – Do I really need to go into who Cerner is? Their one of the industry heavy weights in the EHR world. One thing I’ve personally found interesting in my interactions with Cerner was the type of forward looking features they’re discussing. They seem to have taken a really broad look at what EHR will be like 20 or 30 years from now. They’re asking questions like, How are we going to deal with a 50 year patient record? This is probably deserving of its own post, but I was intrigued by their look at EHR software and being able to do things now that will make life better for doctors in the future.

HITR – Advertiser since 1/2012 – HITR is an interesting Healthcare IT community built around research. Brought to us by Porter Research and Billian’s HealthDATA, it’s a really smart idea to bring together those that can provide and want the research data into one place. Those that participate can get financial and quality performance comparison data on peer facilities and a benchmarking tool that can help providers. They can also rank vendor products and see how other providers have ranked those products.

Greenway – Advertiser since 3/2012 – Coming off their successful public offering, Greenway (GWAY) is well positioned to be a big player in the EHR market. Doesn’t hurt that thehave 40,000 healthcare providers in 30 specialties using their products and services. I’m also intrigued by Greenway’s new Marketplace. We’ll see how many leverage Greenway’s API technology on top of PrimeSuite.

Online Tech – Advertiser since 3/2012 – As I recently posted on EMR and HIPAA, Online Tech is a hosting company that takes security and privacy seriously. If you’re looking for a host that can meet the HIPAA guidelines you should take a look at Online Tech. Talk to them and then to other hosting companies and I bet you’ll see a big difference in how they approach the HIPAA requirements.

SequelMed – Advertiser since 11/2009 – I think the Sequelmed home page describes them well: trusted by over 15,000 physicians and over 1,000 practices. I think Sequelmed is one of the many EHR companies out there that’s generally gone along quietly about their business. They aren’t big and flashy, but they keep adding more and more doctors and servicing those doctors they already have on board.

NoMoreClipboard – Advertiser since 2/2012 – I recently called the NoMoreClipboard and iMPak product offering the “most creative technology” I found at HIMSS 2012. I plan to do a full post on the technology at some point as well. Although, I love the approach that NoMoreClipboard and iMPak have taken to be able to get the data to improve healthcare while realizing that many don’t want to have to deal with all the tech details. This is a hard concept for many of us that live and breathe tech to understand and appreciate, but many people want tech solutions that more easily fit into their life flow.

There you have it. I really appreciate each of these companies support. I hope to continue working with these companies many years into the future as we continue covering the crazy world of EHR and healthcare IT.

Some Changes to EMR and EHR Advertising

As I like to do every couple months, I like to make mention of some of the new advertisers to EMR and EHR and recognize the previous advertisers that continue to renew. Plus, there have been some interesting changes to advertising on EMR and EHR that are worth highlighting.

The HealthcareScene.com blog network is now 14 blogs strong and EMR and EHR is one of the pillars of the network. EMR and EHR has seen some great growth and recorded its best month ever last month. Woot! Thanks to all of you for reading and participating in the comments as well.

In order to handle the growth of EMR and EHR and the Healthcare Scene Blog network in general, I decided to modify how I handled advertising on the site and start rotating all of the ads on EMR and EHR. That way there would be equal exposure for all advertisers on the site including new advertisers. It would also keep the site fresh for readers. Plus, as part of the change, I implemented an ad server to deliver the ads on the site.

The ad server is really exciting, because it will open up a lot of new options like geo-targeted ads (which many people have wanted) and also possibly delivering ads on a CPC (click) or CPM (impression) basis instead of the flat monthly rate that we do now. That will allow advertisers to work with a more limited budget if they can’t pay the full monthly rate. Not to mention, the ad server will be able to provide advertisers more details stats on their EMR and healthcare IT ad campaigns.

Quest-Medplus-Care360 EHR – I’m really excited to have Care360 as an advertiser on EMR and EHR. I’ve written quite a few times about the Care360 EHR by Quest (yes, the big lab company). I find their model and approach really interesting for an EHR company. Plus, I know they are really focused in their EHR marketing efforts and so I’m glad that they saw value in advertising on EMR and EHR. If you’re a Quest customer already, it’s really a simple decision to check out the Care360 EHR. You already have a login, they just have to activate the EHR portion. All the SaaS EHR fans out there will love their completely web based approach as well.

Amazing Charts – I love the story of how Amazing Charts became an advertiser, but I’ll save that for another time. Started by a Family Practice Physician in 2001, they’ve been around for quite a while. I’ve heard many people comment on Amazing Charts being one of the most affordable EHR software out there. Plus, with their Free EHR trial it’s easy for doctors to try it out and see if it fits with their EHR needs.

It’s fun for me to look back at the origins of EMRandEHR.com. I use to call it my “throw away” blog. Now, it’s turned into a really great place for discussing EMR and EHR. Not to mention the hot topics of meaningful use and iPad EMR (2 of the top search engine referrals for this site). Now I have a new throw away EMR site. I’m really proud of the EMR and EHR readership and the discussion that happens in the comments. Not to mention the great addition of Katherine Rourke as a regular writer. She provides some unique perspectives.

Now, on to the important stuff. Check out these new EMR and EHR advertisers since I last posted in December:
DrChrono – An EMR built from the ground up for the iPad and includes medical speech to text built in. They offer features like eRx, Paperless Medical Billing, Speech-to-Text, Customizable Note interfaces, and drug-drug interaction. Drchrono offers a freemium pricing model. So, you can go and download their free version to your iPad and try it out. I’m still trying to convince them to send me an iPad so I can try it out. Sadly, my hopes of winning an iPad at HIMSS were shattered. One day I’ll get my hands on an iPad and try these and other EMR software out. Until then, check DrChrono out and let me know what you think in the comments.

Nuesoft – I always have strong emotions when I see the name Nuesoft. About 6 years ago I took a trip to Nuesoft’s Atlanta office and was trained in EMR. I was a tech person with no healthcare knowledge, but the people at Nuesoft helped me get up to speed. Enough about my experience. Nuesoft offers a SaaS EHR software along with a medical billing service called Nuetopia. They also create great videos. Here’s one video they just created about Reworking Claims Submission Workflow to Maximize Revenue.

Records Management, LTD – One major issue with any new EMR implementation is what to do with all of the old paper files. Records Management Ltd offer complete records management solutions for medical practices dealing with this issue. They image and index your files with a state-of-the art technology and then secure them both physically and digitally. I also love that they had a service to handle retiring physicians records as well. I hadn’t ever thought about that need.

Medical Web Experts – I’m really happy to have John Deutsch and his team at Medical Web Experts advertising on EMR and EHR. He was my first ever advertiser. Among a number of marketing services that he offers, Medical Web Experts is putting in a lot of work in the patient portal space. They have a real focus on the customer (doctors and patients) that I like and I’m interested to see their product develop.

I’d been meaning to do a post thanking all of the wonderful advertisers on EMR and EHR for a while now. I knew it had been a while. I checked today and I hadn’t really thanked my advertisers on this site since February just before HIMSS. How ironic that just yesterday I purchased my plane ticket and hotel for HIMSS in Orlando (BTW, I hope to meet many of you at HIMSS).

It seems fitting then on this Christmas Eve to thank all of my EMR and EHR advertisers for making 2010 a wonderful year for the site. In that regard, I’ll go through each advertiser and add a few comments about each. Feel free to click through to the following EMR and HIPAA sponsors and take a look at what they have to offer. They do after all keep the lights on here at EMR and EHR.

MD-IT – MD-IT has been an advertiser for a good while on both this site and EMR and EHR. I also had a great chance to meet Robin from MD-IT at HIMSS last year and it was a real pleasure. She’s a dynamic individual with a fantastic energy about her. I think that’s also reflected in MD-IT the company. Take a look at their EMR offering (especially if you’re a doctor who wants to still use transcription with their EMR).

Practice Fusion – The first Free EMR that I found. I’ve often called them the most Web 2.0 EMR company that I found. I say that from a technology perspective, but also from a company culture and marketing approach as well. It’s pretty much a no brainer decision to try out Practice Fusion if you’re looking at EMR software (or see my Practice Fusion EMR review). It’s free to sign up and you can test drive the product all you want. The best way to truly demo an EMR software is to use it.

Ambir – Ambir has a bunch of scanner solutions for healthcare. For some reason, they’re one of the only health care IT device companies that’s advertised on EMR and EHR. Not sure exactly why, because Ambir’s been advertising on here and EMR and HIPAA for a long time. Check out their duplex professional grade ID card scanner. Perfect for front desk scanning. If you’ve ever used a cheap scanner, you know why you need one that’s professional grade. Otherwise, you’ll be buying a new one a few months later.

Sfax – I’ve been happy to have Sfax advertising on both of my EMR sites for a long time. I recently did a review of Sfax’s secure fax service. Let’s just say that I was really pleasantly surprised by Sfax’s secure fax implementation. As I said in that post, “If I was an EMR vendor and didn’t have an integrated faxing service yet, I’d be on the phone to Sfax to talk about leveraging their API so I could worry about other EMR features.”

MxSecure – Another long term advertiser on both EMR sites. MxSecure has a nice transcription business, but has also launched an EMR software for small practices. Obviously, with a transcription background, they work to integrate EMR, Transcription and Speech Recognition into the EMR experience.

MDCare – An ONC-ATCB 2011-2012 EMR vendor that is handwriting enabled. They’re a web based EMR which many of my readers really like. They’re surescripts certified as well. They offer practice specific customizations for an affordable price. Plus, the feature that I like most is that you can try it for free. Nothing like a hands on test drive.

SOAPware – One of the oldest EMR software that I know of. They’ve been doing EMR software for a long time. This year they finally added a true integrated PM software to their EMR offering. A smart move since almost every practice wants the PMS and EMR from one company (one neck to ring). Dr. Randall Oates that started SOAPware is one of the most sincere and thoughtful individuals I’ve met in the EMR world. It’s no wonder that SOAPware has done so well.

Enterprise Software Deployment (ESD) – ESD is an EHR consulting company. Over 90% of their consultants come from a clinical background. The other 10% have IT experience in healthcare settings with Allscripts, Cerner, Eclipsys, Epic, McKesson, Meditech and Seimens EHR systems. So, if you’re looking for some consulting help, take a look at what they have to offer. Not to mention if you have experience with these systems and are looking for a job, check out their website for the EMR job opportunities they have available.

Thanks to all of these advertisers. It’s amazing to go through the list and see how many of the advertisers have been advertising for so long. Makes me feel good to know that they’ve seen value from advertising and continue to renew their ads.

More Advertisers on EMR and EHR Just in Time for HIMSS 10

I’m seriously ramping up for HIMSS right now. Today I sifted through 200+ emails from PR people about HIMSS. I filtered that down to about the 15 best companies that would be of interest to readers of this site. Add that to my existing connections and get ready for the fire hose of HIMSS coverage on this blog. Between this site and my other site, EMR and HIPAA, you’ll hopefully feel almost like you’re there with me. I will try to save some for the few weeks after HIMSS as well.
