Post-HIMSS13 Discussion — #HITsm Chat Highlights
#HITsm T1: What takeaways from #HIMSS13 can we apply to the challenge of improving #patientengagement?
T1: Patient engagement is the key to moving anything in #healthIT forward and creating marked change in the industry — it has to be #hitsm
— Jenny Laurello (@HITExchange) March 15, 2013
T1: As Iron Maiden once put it, if we build infrastructure for #patientengagement keeping privacy/security #1, patients will use it #hitsm
— Don Fluckinger (@DonFluckinger) March 15, 2013
T1: Patient engagement will advance as we integrate further with tools and cultural cues that are already natural for users #HITsm

T1: Saw a lot of #HIMSS13 focus on wearable health. That’ll work for some patients. What about those reluctant to use tech? #HITsm

#HITsm T2. Best chance at driving #interoperability: A vendor initiative like CommonWell or a community initiative like TheCUREProject?
T2: Am I being jaded or is “ONC bringing the hammer” the best answer? Feel free to boo me like Gary Cherone fronting Van Halen #hitsm

T2. If #commonwell is smart, they’ll attempt to harness crowd power. I know many of the leaders think this way… #HITSm

T2 Neglected to mention imPatient Movement (HealthVault, NoMoreClipBoard, Indiana HIT). Another wrinkle. #HITsm
— Brian Eastwood (@Brian_Eastwood) March 15, 2013
T2: #interoperability will accelerate when we see #privacy #security #identity #data at Internet scale, not just healthcare #hitsm

#HITsm T3: The recent eHI report notes that most advanced HIEs get revenue from a single source. How can this model be changed?
T3: Scariest question in weeks. If model can’t change, are we reduced to “Last EHR vendor standing, THEN we’ll be interoperable?” #hitsm
— Don Fluckinger (@DonFluckinger) March 15, 2013
T3. I don’t know if it can. Only, if like VA and Kaiser, there’s an enlightened payer involved with motivation to support sharing. #HITSm
— Leonard Kish (@leonardkish) March 15, 2013
T3: My biggest gripe with #HIE is that it is replicating the ability the Internet already has to make #data accessible. 1/2 #hitsm
— CLOUDHealth™ (@CLOUDHealth) March 15, 2013
T3: HIEs that I’ve seen:functionality there but seperate service/site from the EMR application. Want HIE integrated into the EMR! #hitsm

#HITsm T4: Now that #HIMSSanity is over, what’s the next major #healthIT conference on your calendar? Why?
T4: Up next on my schedule, #IHE Meetings in Italy, then HL7 coming up soon & ONC S&I calls weekly. Next BIG thing? Some time to DO #HITsm
— Keith W. Boone (@motorcycle_guy) March 15, 2013
T4: I’ll be at the SIIM conference in June. Maybe at the @dellhealth tweetup next week. Is it Mon or Tues @2healthguru? #HITsm
— Chad Johnson (@OchoTex) March 15, 2013
T4 I have a couple @iht2 events coming up. One’s in Florida in June. For a half-Canadian, that’ll be interesting. #HITsm
