As the year comes to a close, I’m starting to think about my conference plans for 2015. I traveled quite a bit to some amazing conferences in 2014 and I’m sure I’ll be doing more of the same in 2015.

Ever since August 2014, I’ve been listing my Health IT and EHR conference plans on EMR and HIPAA for others to see. Hopefully it’s a great resource for those trying to navigate the Healthcare IT conferences.

I imagine I’ll probably do a similar schedule of events this year. So far I only have CES, HIMSS, and the Health IT Marketing and PR Conference on my spring conference calendar. Thankfully, the spring conference season is much calmer for me.

I’d love to see and hear what conferences are on your radar for 2015. Are there health IT conferences I should consider adding to my list? I always love to hear about new ones, so please share in the comments or on our contact us page. Along those same lines, let me know which are your must attend health IT conferences. Thanks in advance for sharing with myself and the broader EMR and EHR community.

Healthcare IT and EHR Conferences – Fall 2014

I’m regularly asked which Health IT and EHR conferences I’ll be attending and also asked for suggestions on which conferences people should attend and sponsor. After thinking about the best way to let everyone know the answers to these questions, I decided to create a page of Health IT and EHR Conferences and events that I’ll update regularly.

As you’ll see, I’ve broken the page into three sections: conferences I’m attending, important annual conferences, and user conferences. This is not meant to be an all inclusive list. There are some other people who do that pretty well. Instead, I wanted to focus on those events that are annual events that I attend or would like to attend regularly (I’m trying to limit my travel, but that’s not working so well. Although, you’ll see the bias towards Vegas events since I live in Vegas.). Plus, we’ll include discount codes to the events when we can.

I’d love to hear if there are other events that you think we should add to the list. I especially would like to know about the various Health IT and EHR user conferences that are happening. I’ve really fallen in love with those events because you get so many of the in the trenches users at the events.

I love to connect with readers, so if you’re at one of these events let me know so we can meet and say hi. I’ll also likely be speaking at some of the events as well, but I’m finalizing the details of that now.

Hopefully you’ll find this list useful. Also, you’ll notice that Healthcare Scene readers can get a discount to the Digital Health Conference in New York City. Just use the discount code “HCS” when you register and you’ll get a 20% discount on your registration. It’s a great event and one I look forward to every year.

Looks like it’s going to be a fun fall full of too much travel, but worth it to meet with hundreds of amazing people. I hope to see you at one of the events. Let me know what events you have on your list for Fall 2014.

Health IT Conferences 2012

The good people over at Search Health IT have put together a calendar of Healthcare IT related conferences happening in 2012. Just going through the list is a bit overwhelming and I’m sure they haven’t gotten each and every healthcare IT conference out there. I think they don’t have MGMA on there and the NYeC conference, Digital Health Summit, that I attended last year. Maybe I’m partially overwhelmed because I’m still in the post-HIMSS recovery cycle, but looking at the list it’s pretty clear health IT is in vogue.

I honestly don’t have any conferences firmly placed on my agenda for 2012. I’d like to hit the AHIMA conference and MGMA conference again. I really enjoyed both of those in 2011. I loved Connected Health Symposium, Digital Health Summit, and the mHealth Summit last year. I just know I don’t want to travel as much this year as last year. So, I’m going to have to be more selective.

So, there you have it. I have a big undecided on which healthcare IT conferences to attend in the rest of 2012. Which conferences will you be attending? Which conferences do you think I should attend? With so many choices, I’m going to have to be much more selective and find new ways to differentiate which conferences I attend. I was spoiled this past year having HIMSS and MGMA in the beautiful Las Vegas.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on conferences.

Today I learned about a Healthcare IT conference happening in New York City on December 1-2, 2011. It’s called the Digital Health Conference and is put together by the NYeC (New York eHealth Collaborative).

Here’s the description of the event from their website:

This two-day conference will educate and bring together health information technology (HIT) stakeholders including providers of all types: the public sector, private industry, health plans, hospital administration. This showcase of the latest technologies inspires collaboration, and celebrates achievements and the advancement of healthcare innovation.

They have Todd Park and T.R. Reid listed as keynote speakers for the event. They also have the educational tracks listed as: Innovation in the Inpatient Setting, Advances in Primary Care, Chronic Care Management, and Health and Wellness.

Depth in an EMR Conference

I’ve been having a good time today at the Health Tech Next Generation conference in San Francisco. They have some really interesting people from healthcare IT that are here. For me as an EMR and healthcare IT blogger, it’s a lot of fun to be able to “talk shop” with a bunch of HIT people. However, I can’t help but sit here wondering where the doctors are. Certainly there’s a place for an HIT industry insider conference, but I can’t say I’ve ever seen a true EMR conference focused on doctors, practice managers and actual users of the EMR. This wasn’t the intent of this conference, so it’s nothing against Health Tech Next Generation. I just think there’s an opportunity to create a conference focused on just EHR and provide unbiased information for doctors.

This really started hitting home for me when I was preparing to moderate a panel on EMR 101. The challenge was quite clear. I had an hour to try and cover EMR 101. Really? That’s bascially IMPOSSIBLE!

Here’s my broad list of what should be covered in an EMR 101:
To EMR or Not to EMR
EMR Selection
EMR Implementation
EHR Stimulus/Meaningful Use

I’m sure there are other areas that could be interesting. However, this would be a good start to get doctors ready to select and implement an EMR. Or at least make an educated decision to go with EMR or not.

The question is how do you get enough doctors together at an EMR conference. That part I haven’t figured out, but I’m interested in your ideas. I’d love to partner with a provider organization to create an event like this. I’m talking about an upfront unbiased approach to EHR. No kool-aid drinking talks allowed. Just a deep dive into the real details of selecting and implementing an EHR. I’m sure the EHR vendors would be happy to exhibit at the event.

What do you think? Would an EMR conference like this do well? I think it’s missing in the industry, but I’m not sure how you put it together properly.

EMR and Healthcare IT Related Conferences

I’ve been itching to attend a conference the past couple months and haven’t found one that is the right fit for my needs and interests. So, I was excited to see HITECH answers list of Fall 2011 Healthcare IT conferences.

Although, after looking at the list I was a little disappointed. I’m definitely going to MGMA in Las Vegas this year. Plus, I’m probably about 90% sure I’m going to AHIMA in Salt Lake City. I would be interested in going to CHIME, but it’s at the same time as MGMA. So, I guess that’s not really a possibility. Plus, I’m not sure how much CHIME likes bloggers at their conference.

I really would like to go to a health IT conference in Washington DC this fall. I have a ton of contacts there that I’d love to visit. It’s always nice to put a conference together with visits to smart people. I’m sure something will come up. I’ll just have to keep looking.

Are there other healthcare IT and/or EMR conferences happening this Fall that I should consider? Let me know.
