I think this is true for all EMR software, but particularly so for Epic. It’s always amazing how many skimp on EMR training and then pay the price for it later.

It’s a little hard to see, but illustrates the challenge associated with connecting these external data devices. It’s going to take a while for this to be commonplace and normal. I do find it interesting that they’re using Direct and the hardest interface to build (sending info to the EHR) is “Out of Pilot Scope.” I guess they don’t want to take on the hard stuff in the pilot.

These next 2 tweets are a little self serving since they point to posts on my EMR and HIPAA site. If you’re not subscribed to that site, you should go and do that now. Plus, one of these tweets is about a party at HIMSS, so I don’t imagine I’ll get any complaints there.

I hope to see many of you at HIMSS 2014!

I appreciate Dr. Webster recognizing this as a good one. While I’m biased, I think it’s a really important topic that needs more discussion. Although, I’m pretty sure it won’t be getting me an invite to any ONC dinner parties.

Numbers for HIMSS 2012 in Las Vegas

If you’re in the healthcare IT world, then you’ve no doubt heard all about HIMSS. It’s next week and thanks to the PR people who keep emailing me it’s constantly on my mind (Note to PR People: My HIMSS schedule is now full. Sorry!)

Modern Healthcare put out some numbers on HIMSS 2012 that I thought were really interesting:
-Estimated 35,000-37,000 estimated attendance
-Provider registration is up 16-17%
-Vendor registration is up 18-19%
-Vendor space was sold out 3 weeks ago
-275 companies are exhibiting for the first time

I also love that Steve Lieber says that they’re at more hotel rooms booked than they’ve ever done before. Although, since it’s in the lovely Las Vegas there are still plenty of hotel rooms for people. This quote is the reason why HIMSS should be in Las Vegas every year: “It actually makes it a whole lot easier. We’re dealing with 12 to 15 hotels rather than the 70 or 80 needed to house conventioneers at any other city.”

Be sure to sign up for the New Media Meetup at HIMSS 2012 sponsored by simplifyMD. We only have a couple spots left and then we’re going to turn on a waiting list.

Lots of other excitement at HIMSS. I’ll be doing a Meet the Bloggers session on Wednesday and be part of the Genius Bar at the social media center each day. I look forward to seeing everyone else there.

Also, if you’re looking for some evening networking events at HIMSS, Jennifer Dennard has posted a bunch of them up on HITR.

If you’re planning on going to HIMSS, then hopefully you saw my post on EMR and HIPAA about the New Media Meetup at HIMSS sponsored by simplifyMD. Registration is going fast and I think we’ll be at max capacity this week. It’s setting up to once again be a premiere event at HIMSS.

The good news is that I’m happy to announce that Ozmosis has come on board as the giveaway sponsor of the New Media Meetup. That’s right! They’ve provided 3 Kindle Fire to be given away to those attending the New Media Meetup. I must admit. I want to get my hands on my own Kindle Fire (even though I’m not eligible to win). Thanks to Ozmosis for the giveaways. You can read more about what Ozmosis does below.
